The Best Spring Getaways in Missouri
It has been a long winter, but spring is just around the corner. After weeks — maybe even months — of hunkering down, you deserve a getaway. Whether you’re looking for a day trip, a romantic weekend or a full-on family vacation, here are some of the best ways to enjoy Missouri in the spring.
Missouri Botanical Gardens
Celebrate spring in bloom at St. Louis’ beautiful Missouri Botanical Gardens. One of its signature events, the Orchid Show, lasts until March 24, and gives you the chance to see hundreds of the beautiful flowers. Admission to the gardens is $14 per adult, and another $5 for the Orchid Show.
Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum
After you’ve soaked in all the orchids at the botanical gardens, head over to the historic Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. The only accredited arboretum in St. Louis, the 314-acre space has a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers and local wildlife. Tours of the cemetery, established in 1849, are also available. If you’re still up for some St. Louis nature, head to the St. Louis Zoo and birdwatch at the 1904 World’s Fair Flight Cage and Edward K. Love Conservation Foundation Cypress Swamp.
Big Cedar Lodge
Want to enjoy some rugged terrain during the day but spend the night in a lush, warm bed? Head to the Ozarks and Big Cedar Lodge, 10 miles south of Branson. Priding itself on its “rustic elegance,” this gorgeous resort has close access to beautiful nature trails, golf, fishing and other water activities, child-friendly amenities and on-site spa services to help you unwind.
Powell Gardens
Kansas City has its own botanical gardens, which open on March 1. Hike the lovely 3.25-mile Byron Shutz Nature Trail, stroll along the David T. Beals Woodland & Stream garden, admire the stonework and architecture of the fountain garden, or enjoy the landscape — and the snacks — at the Heartland Harvest Garden.
Treehouse Cabins
If you always dreamed of having a cool treehouse just like every kid in a ‘90s movie or TV show, here’s your chance to fulfill that childhood fantasy. The Missouri Treehouse Cabins near Dora in southern Missouri offer actual treetop cabins that can accommodate you for a romantic weekend for two, a family vacation or even a larger event like a wedding or a reunion. Get out on the water and enjoy some fly fishing, or stay inside and enjoy the waterside views — either way, you’re on top.
