The Best Winter Getaways in Missouri

Who says winter has to be boring? While the temperatures have fallen and the snow may, too, winter still offers plenty of chances for adventure and fun. And that adventure doesn’t mean traveling far from home. For those looking to get away, but not too far away, here are some of the ways to take a winter getaway in Missouri.

St. Louis

For outdoor activities, try sledding on Art Hill in Forest Park or ice skating at Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park, one of the largest outdoor skating parks in the region. (Make a note: They are cash only, so be sure to have cash on hand before you arrive.) Visit the renowned St. Louis Zoo, and get a glimpse of winter-loving animals in their element. Or, if you prefer, stick to the climate-controlled areas of the zoo. (Be sure to check out the penguins.) If you visit St. Louis in January, check out the Delmar Loop Ice Carnival. Held on the famous historic Delmar Loop, the annual festival is from Jan. 18-20 this year and celebrates all things frozen. Ice sculptures, frozen turkey bowling, human dog-sled racing and frozen slides are among this quirky event’s attractions. And if you need to thaw out after, there are plenty of museums, shops and entertainment options to visit.  

Big Cedar Lodge

One of Missouri’s more famous resorts, Big Cedar Lodge is in the Ozark Mountains and offers a range of experiences from rustic to luxurious. Wintertime activities include ice skating, a “sleigh bell scurry,” and special holiday events like “elf visits” and a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. In January, wine lovers can attend the “Celebration of Tastes” event on Jan. 25-26.

Tan-Tar-A Estates at Margaritaville Resorts

Located in Osage Beach in Lake of the Ozarks, this resort offers a range of activities for individuals, couples and families. Golf, horseback rides, boating, bowling are among the activities, but the Timber Falls Indoor Waterpark is one of the biggest attractions. Hotel guests and non-guests can go to the waterpark, which has special hours during spring break season and between Christmas and New Year’s. The resort also has a big New Year’s Eve bash, which starts at $335 per couple for the ballroom affair or $219 for a family at the waterpark.

St. Charles

While St. Charles retains its historic charm year-round, the city’s longrunning Christmas Traditions festival is famous, even attracting the attention of the Chicago Tribune and Midwest Living magazine. The month-long festival pulls out all the stops, with a troupe of historically dressed characters, festive decorations, and a mix of free and ticketed events including a tree-lighting ceremony, Santa parade, concerts and a presentation of “A Christmas Carol.”  

Branson

Head to Brandon for some hot entertainment to ward off the winter blues. From Old Time Christmas events and spectacular light displays to New Year’s Eve fireworks at swanky resorts like the Chateau on the Lake to one of the concerts for which Branson is famous, there is plenty here to keep you warm.
